Reprint of article from the Peabody Journal of Education: "Robert E. Lee, George Peabody, and Sectional Reunion," by Franklin Parker. Originally published in the Peabody Journal of Education, Volume XXXVII, Number 4, January 1960. Recounts the meeting between George Peabody and Robert E. Lee at the Old White Sulphur Springs, Virginia in August 1869. Peabody added a second million dollars to the Peabody Education Fund and extended aid to the impoverished Washington College of Lexington, VA, of which Lee had become President in 1865 after the Civil War. The article references a photograph of Peabody and Lee taken at the Springs in August 1869 with other former Confederate Generals (see 2009.332.1 for a copy of this photo). |
